The release of the new Australian Standard for racking design and operation (AS4084-2023) has set a benchmark for warehouse and logistics operators. Any racking installed or reconfigured must comply with this standard, which was introduced in 2023. Racking purchased prior to 2022, meeting the 2012 standards, is exempt from replacement. However, if it undergoes any changes or exhibits signs of fatigue or damage, it must adhere to AS4084-2023.
Racking that was purchased prior to 2022 and meets the 2012 standards is not required to be replaced. However, in the event of reconfiguration, relocation, or any indications of wear or damage, the racking must adhere to the updated AS 4084-2023 standards.
Important points to keep in mind for operators (asset owners) following AS 4084-2023:
Annual inspections are mandatory and must be conducted by a “Competent Person” with relevant experience in the industry.
All documentation, such as manuals, inspection audits, and repair logs, should be kept for the lifetime of the racking system.
To ensure safety, upright protectors of at least 400mm height should be placed along gangways, at end-of-row frames, and at aisle cross-sections.
Single-sided racking must have backing mesh installed to protect pedestrians behind it if backing on to a walkway.
Load signage must meet certain criteria: being permanent, corrosion-resistant, no smaller than A3 in size, and with a font height of at least 20 mm.
Height restrictions apply when an end frame is next to a trafficable aisle. It must extend past the top load beam by at least 50% of the pallet height.
